Chained, But Still Yet Praying
Text: Colossians 4:2–4 (HCSB)
“Devote yourselves to prayer; stay alert in it with thanksgiving. At the same time, pray also for us that God may open a door to us for the message, to speak the mystery of the Messiah—for which I am in prison—so that I may reveal it as I am required to speak.”
As we were preparing for tonight, I looked at our central text, the one that was placed on the flyer. And I began to walk through the text with the heaviness of everything going on in our lives. It seems like there is so much going on, and it’s all at the same time. This is a strategy for the enemy to keep us overwhelmed, distracted, and confused.
The enemy would not like anything more than to find us in a vulnerable place, to make us doubt or even forget what God had promised us. For you see, when we walk by sight, it is easy to see and experience all the negative and get caught up in the headlines to the point where we feel like giving up, and when we reach this point, we can easily put prayer on the back burner.
I know you are holy ghost-filled and sanctified, that you never thought about doubting God or giving up or giving in. But, if I can be honest with you tonight, there have been days when I thought with all the news, the executive orders, the changes in policies that I had to ask the question, God, where are you?
I feel like Habakkuk at times, God, how long are you going to watch this and allow this to happen? And as I centered myself in meditation, I was reminded by the Holy Spirit of the purpose and the power of prayer.
Tonight, we are gathered in this place to bring our petitions to God through prayer and in the name of Jesus the Christ. We are here to declare the word and the works of our God.
We are here to make a sound in the atmosphere, that on tonight, we trust God with our everything and with all things!
Tonight, our voices shall pierce the atmosphere to shake the foundation of heaven and to rattle the gate of hell.
Here in this text, Paul is in prison in Rome. He is waiting for his trial to come before Caesar. He writes this letter, this epistle to the people in Colossae. He did not know them, but they knew of him and his ministry in Christ Jesus. Paul is encouraging them to walk and live right, even in the midst of adversity and trials and tribulations. These Gentiles were under pressure to live their lives and their faith life under the Jewish Law, and added false teaching to their faith. The bible tells us they were priding themselves on having visions and getting secret spiritual knowledge.
Paul contends that once you know that Jesus is the anchor of the faith, and that through him all things were made. God has reconciled through Jesus’ death on the cross. This is proof of the fulfillment of the prophecies of old.
Paul warns against false philosophies, legalism, and religious control that distract from Christ. Believers are complete in Christ, not bound by external rituals or manmade systems. Jesus is described as the “image of the invisible God” and the one who holds all things together. Paul prays for the church to grow in wisdom and endurance.
Paul emphasizes devoted prayer, watchfulness, and gospel-centered speech. While locked up and awaiting trial, Paul continues to encourage the family of faith to pray and keep believing. I can’t imagine being in this situation and still holding on to faith, prayer, and Jesus!! But Paul is saying, when, you have Jesus, He is enough
Paul, without doubt, knowing the power of prayer and of Jesus, dismisses his own situation to call for a prayer meeting. He understands that evil is present, and false teachers are trying to convince the people not to believe Jesus is supreme.
Let me pause right now to let you know that even in these times, Jesus is still supreme! Jesus is still the anchor of our faith. Jesus still has all power. Jesus is the one sent by God to liberate us! In the midst of all the headlines, God is still calling us to pray! Pray without ceasing. Pray when you don’t feel like praying. Pray when things are good. Pray when things are not good. Pray in season and out of season!
Colossians is a call to reject oppressive systems and embrace Christ as the liberating center of all life spiritually, socially, and politically. It urges believers to pray, speak, and live boldly under the authority of Christ, not the empire, not the white house.
In African American theology, prayer has always been both a spiritual connection and a resistance strategy. From plantation fields to civil rights marches, prayer was a form of protest and power.
For you see, prayer is a strategy. Prayer is not passive. Prayer is an action word.
Prayer Connects Us to God
Prayer is not just wordsit is a relationship. It draws us into communion with the Divine, where we can both speak and listen. In a world that often devalues Black lives, prayer is a sacred protest of presence a declaration that we are seen and heard by a God who walks with the oppressed (Exodus 3:7).
“The Lord said: I have observed the misery of my people in Egypt, and have heard them crying out.” – Exodus 3:7 (HCSB)
Prayer Changes Us
While we often think of prayer changing circumstances, its deeper power is how it transforms us—our posture, priorities, and inner peace. It sharpens our discernment, refines our character, and builds spiritual resilience, especially in systems designed to wear us down.
“Do not worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God... will guard your hearts.” – Philippians 4:6-7 (HCSB)
Prayer Moves Us Toward Liberation
In the African American tradition, prayer is also a protest, a lament, and a vision. Our ancestors prayed through slavery, Jim Crow, and into movements for justice. Prayer doesn't make us passive, it empowers action. It calls us to co-labor with God in the work of liberation.
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” – Matthew 6:10 (HCSB)
Prayer is Sacred Memory
Every time we pray, we call on the God of our ancestors, the same God who heard the cries of Hagar, the songs of Harriet Tubman, and the chants of those marching for civil rights. Prayer links us to a legacy of faith that endures.
